What is Miswak (Miswaak) or Chewing Stick?

The miswak (miswaak, siwak, sewak, Arabic: سواك‎‎ or مسواك) is an Arabic and Urdu Word, and it is a teeth cleaning twig made from the (Salvadora Persica tree) also known as Arak and it can also twig many of other trees.

Etiquette of Miswaak or Chewing Stick

  1. Don’t use it whilst lying since there is a possibility of bad temper.
  2. To use Miswaak in ablution is an emphasized Sunnah
  3. Miswak is Sunnah for ablution and not for Salaah.
  4. Use the Miswak from one end and not both.
  5. Females can also use the Miswaak.
  6. Cut the bristles (tip) of the Miswaak every 1-2 days and begin fresh by biting to make it soft.
  7. It is permissible to use Miswaak whilst fasting.
  8. To use the Miswak after meal, you will get the benefit of liberating 2 slaves.
  9. The Miswaak shouldn’t be too hard or too soft.
  10. It is produced from trees like Zaytoon, Peelu or Neem but not from a fragrant tree.
  11. Rub the Miswak on the gums at least 3 times and dip it in water every time.
  12. Place the Miswaak upright when not being used.
  13. Clean your miswaak at least 3 times a day.
  14. Don’t use Miswaak in an up or down motion but apply it from right to left since there is a chance of harming the gums.
  15. The Miswaak should not be thicker than the ring finger and longer than the hand
  16. Use the right hand to use Miswaak.
  17. It is disliked to use the Miswak in the washroom.
